True prayer should well up from the heart, addressing the Father and praying through His Son, Jesus Christ. While communal prayer holds a special place in life—such as blessing a meal, interceding for someone’s health, or navigating life’s challenges together—your most intimate prayers are meant to be a sacred, private conversation between you and the Lord.

Matthew 6:6

“But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”

KJV Bible

I will share a little about how I pray and why. I always begin my prayers by expressing gratitude for all the Lord has done and continues to do for my family and myself. This can include anything you are thankful for—whether it is thanking Him for His guidance, His forgiveness, providing for our needs, or even thanking Him for sending His Son, Jesus Christ, so that our sins are forgiven. Interestingly, science has finally caught up with this spiritual practice: when you focus your thoughts and words on gratitude, it becomes nearly impossible to feel depressed. Therefore, being grateful to the Lord is also wonderfully beneficial for your mental health.

After expressing my gratitude, I ask the Lord to forgive my sins and grant me the strength to resist temptation. Then, I present my needs to Him—not in a selfish way, such as asking to win the lottery, but by seeking guidance, a deeper understanding of His Word (the Bible), the ability to support others in prayer, protection for my family, and whatever else I trust He can provide and help me imrove myself or my life.

If you ever struggle to find the right words or aren’t sure where to begin, remember that Jesus gave His disciples the Lord’s Prayer as a perfect guide. You can always start there.

Matthew 6:9–13

After this manner therefore pray ye: “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen”

Prayer is my personal pathway to drawing closer to the Lord and learning how to truly communicate with Him. When you pray, make it your own and pour your heart into it, knowing that God understands the intentions of your heart far better than any spoken words. Cultivate a habit of praying often; I find myself talking to God throughout the entire day. Remember that prayers do not always need to be long and formal. Sometimes, it is as simple as asking the Lord for a little extra patience when you are stuck in traffic and running late. If it has been a while—or if you have never prayed before—try it today. Experience the transformation that comes from building a daily, ongoing conversation with God, and you will soon begin to see meaningful changes in your life.

There is truly no wrong way to pray, provided your intentions are pure and free of malice or selfishness.
