Reading Your Bible

Reading Your Bible

There is truly no incorrect way to engage with Scripture; as a living text, the Bible continually reveals fresh insights with every reading. Speaking of Scripture, do you know the story behind it? Watch this short video to discover how it was composed by various authors over the course of 1,500 years.

I find it truly amazing how it proves the text was constructed by a single author and ultimate authority: God. Regardless of how you read your Bible, the frequency with which you read it truly matters. Watch the video below to discover the findings of a study on the impact of Bible reading frequency.

I prefer reading over watching videos. I read my Bible daily, starting from the beginning at a pace of two or three chapters a day. Afterward, I plan to compare my reading with another version to see how translations differ, though we can discuss that another time.

If you find yourself struggling to read your Bible, take a moment to reflect on the root cause. Many readers cite the archaic language of traditional translations as a barrier to understanding. Fortunately, numerous modern translations are available that offer greater clarity. However, a word of caution: be mindful of paraphrases and secondary translations that have been adapted from intermediate languages rather than the original ancient texts.

Many readers struggle with the sheer density of the Bible. If you start at Genesis, it won’t be long before you hit Deuteronomy or Numbers. These books can be especially challenging, and retaining the information is a formidable task. That is why rereading is so beneficial. However, if you find yourself stuck, follow the example of many and jump straight to the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These books primarily record the spoken words of Jesus. For the best experience, I recommend using a red-letter Bible, which highlights the words of Christ in red to help you easily follow His teachings.

The point is to read your Bible, and read it often. It is the primary way to understand what little we can of God and Jesus. Experience for yourself the profound impact it will have on your lifeโ€”I am certain it will transform you.
